Your perception of a place is often
determined by the weather you chance to get when visiting. Our one full day in
Zurich proved to be a perfect late winter day. Yes, a bit cool, starting the
day at around 3 degrees, but as the sun broke through Zurich’s beauty was on
full display.
A city travel brochure encouraged us that
if the sun was shining, a trip on the local ferry around Lake Zurich was
essential. The ferry stopped at about a dozen destinations up and down the lake
as locals went about their daily routines. The sun was so glorious that we
braved the foc’sle (outside at the front of the ferry) – we enjoyed an
uninterrupted view of Zurich’s beautiful lake surrounded by huge snow capped
mountains. Yes, it was down jacket and beanie weather, but the warm winter sun
was delightful.
In the afternoon we again followed our local
travel brochure, which suggested a visit to Uetilberg Mountain from which we
could enjoy a panoramic view of the lake and the city of Zurich. We considered
braving the climb up into the snow, but decided to enjoy Swiss engineering, resulting
in a steep but reasonably priced train trip to the mountain peak. The steps up
the 60 metre phone tower were worth the effort as the view from the top was
sublime.
Sun in the morning, and snow in the
afternoon – almost as good as the Swiss chocolate we felt obliged to sample at
the end of the day.
