In Ljubljana, river Ljubljanica is definitely
the centre of everything. In recent days we have enjoyed long walks along a
creek and around several lakes so it is high time we strolled along a river.
With the sun again shining the faithful are out, dressed in fashionable warm
winter clothing, predominantly in dark colours. One particular style of coat we
noticed is very popular and priced at a cool 400 Euro.
Ljubljana
is a small city with only 250,000 locals. The river Ljubljanica snakes its way around the old town the way the Seine meanders
through Paris. Of course the river is much smaller and the city much more
compact, but like Paris it is very beautiful and quite romantic. The sun is a
magnet as the cafe and bar crowds move from one side of the river to the other depending
on where the sun is shining. The architecture combines Medieval, Baroque and Modern. Thankfully cars have
been banished from most of the city, leaving pedestrians are free to meander at will.

In Sydney there is a suburb called Castle Hill
with neither a castle nor a hill. Ljubljana’s castle hill does have a real castle
and it is on a significant rocky outcrop above the city. To Wendy’s delight, the castle can be accessed by a
funicular (you might need to look that up in your Funk and Wagnall). Love those
funiculars! The castle was essentially
rebuilt in the 20th century and lacks the authenticity of many
ancient castles, but still provides visitors with a magical vista.
A weekend in Ljubljana and the local anthem seems
to be – I’m all ‘bout that sun, ‘bout
that sun (no treble).
Follow the sun. be led by the locals.
